Norman Kelley; Writer/Producer, Director

A freelance journalist, author, and former segment producer at WBAI 99.5 FM Pacifica Radio (NYC), Norman Kelley has also written for Understanding Government, Society, L.A. Weekly, The Brooklyn Rail, The Village Voice, The Nation, New York Press, Newsday, and Word.com, The Black Star News, New Politics, Black Renaissance/Noir, and The Bedford Stuyvesant Current.  He is the author of the Black Heat (Amistad), The Big Mango (Akashic Books), and A Phat Death (Akashic), as well as editing and contributing to R&B (Rhythm and Business): The Political Economy of Black Music (Akashic Books). The Head Negro in Charge Syndrome: The Dead End of Black Politics (Nation Books, 2004) is his fifth book. A native of Washington, D. C., he attended the University of the District of Columbia (formerly Federal City College), New York University, and received his B.A. degree in Politics and Media from Empire State College in 1991.

Adele Schmidt, Consulting Producer, Camera and Editing

Adele Schmidt is an adjunct professorial lecturer of the Film and Media Arts Division at American University. She is a film & video producer, director and editor who has won numerous awards in both documentary and fiction films, including TIVA-DC’s Peer Award, the U.S. International Film and Video Festival Award, the Telly Awards and the Gabriel Award. She is co-founder of Zeitgeist Media LLC, an independent production company that currently released the documentary “Romantic Warriors – A Progressive Music Saga”, a film about progressive rock music. She is co-founder of Docs In Progress an organization that creates community through documentary. Originally from Germany, Adele taught film and video production at the National Center for Cinematographic Studies, Mexico City. Currently Adele teaches graduate and undergraduate film and video production courses at SOC. Adele has served as a panelist for the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (Maryland), reviewing applications in the disciplines of writing, philosophy, history, and media arts.
